Dubrovnik, Croatia a UNESCO designated world heritage city. The ancient old town with i's massive wall and ramparts was completed in the 13th century and remains basically the same except for modern day improvements. The city was bombed by the Serbs in 1991/92 but has been restored to its former greatness. The terra cotta covered roofs, winding streets, and no cars within the walled town is refreshing and reminds me of Venice minus the canals.
My cruise ship the MSC Poesia docked at the Port of Gruz, about 4 km away from this ancient walled city. Ship provides a shuttle into the city but it does cost you, it's 8 Euros for the return transportation, still cheaper than a taxi. It takes about 15 minutes to get into the old town depending on traffic.
Not much to see around the cruise terminal but you can take a short walk to the marina, some small shops and cafes around that area.
Language here is Croatian however most people speak reasonably fluent English, even the border patrol that checks your passport, and yes you need your passport to leave the cruise ship terminal.
Currency here is the Kuna and you will get about 5 Kunas for an American dollar. The Euro is accepted and if you need money there are plenty of ATM machines around.
As i was only here for about 5 hours all I was able to do was visit the old city. The city streets are lined with small souvenir shops, restaurants, ice cream shops land many outdoor cafes, where you can just relax and watch the world go by. But being the adventurous guy , I climbed the "Wall". Make sure you wear comfortable shoes for exploring this city, can't stress that enough.
Some highlights of the ctown are the 14th century Franciscan Monastery, the Dominican Monastery, the Cathedral and the Synagogue.
The wall circles the city, and is only accessible by s steep stairs from two entrances. There is a small charge for entry but it's worth it.
Some portions of the wall are about 80 feet above the city and you get some spectacular views of the town itself, the private homes and the Adriatic Sea as you will see in the pictures I have posted. The wall also gives you access to some pretty cool bars, that face the Adriatic. They offer small beaches and table service.
Internet access should you need it is available at the Dubrovnik Internet Center just outside the main gate - called the Pile gate.
If you decide to skip the old town and just want to go the beach, then try Banja's it's located by the Excelsior hotel.
So another week of traveling has almost come to an end. I sail for Venice and then hop on a plane and head back home to Toronto.
Stay tuned for more travels coming up shortly.
